Arthurian Legend Even though the Arthur legend is hundreds of years old, our culture today is still fascinated with the idea of the Round Table and the love triangle between Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere. There are movies and books galore to read about the different takes on the legend of Arthur. However, it makes one wonder if our culture really understands the Arthurian legend. Especially in the movies the central idea of a literary work can be lost. Compared to Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur have movies lost sight of what the Arthurian legend tries to teach? Le Morte d’Arthur has several different themes working within in for Hollywood to choose from. An easy one for moviemakers is the glorification of the hero. In Malory’s work†¦show more content†¦Unfortunately, the Round Table is destroyed by the above mentioned betrayal. Another theme that is also borrowed from Beowulf is the idea of the sword representing destruction. The sword in the stone is what starts a great deal of the trouble. The sword is what continues to start such trouble. Merlin warns Arthur that the sword is better off in its sheath but Arthur does not listen. Instead, the sword is used to try to solve problems and ends up creating many more. The last major theme was a common one during the time Malory was writing: courtly love. This theme is definitely something our culture has dwelled on. The idea of two lovers who cannot be together because of marriage is all too interesting for the culture that is also obsessed with soap operas. One could say that many more movies that do not even mention Arthur could be based on the Arthurian legend if they imitate courtly love. Any movie with a love triangle could be game. However, the key element of courtly love is that there must be a third party. If the love is not forbidden it just is not worth the trouble. The first movie examined for the comparison was Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. Without even watching it, one knows there are striking differences. One main reason for several differences if that the movie is a cartoon and is geared towards children. A girl walked toward me from the porch and stopped a foot away. â€Å"I apologize,† I said to her. Her teeth were pearly white, and one of her front teeth was slightly crooked. Freckles dusted her upturned nose. She smelled sweet, like oranges. I realized it had been a long time since I had found a woman beautiful for more than the sweet smell of her blood. But cruelty lay behind her beauty, because this woman was responsible for my brothers imprisonment. â€Å"Maybe youre too handsome to be killed. And everyone deserves a little kindness, dont you think?† I gazed at her callused hands, a thought entering my mind. â€Å"Would it be too forward of me to ask for more of your kindness?† Callie narrowed her eyes. â€Å"Depends on what you ask for.† â€Å"A job,† I said, straightening my shoulders. The girl shook her head incredulously. â€Å"You want me to hire you? The fight,† I said, once again clenching my fists and biting back words of anger. â€Å"Yes.† She smiled somewhat ruefully. â€Å"Then youll have the chance to see your vampire in action.† â€Å"I suppose I will,† I said, turning on my heel and exiting the wrought-iron gate. But if I had my way, no one would see the â€Å"vampire in action† because Damon and I would be long gone before the fight ever commenced. Chapter 15 October 7, 1864 Something has changed. Maybe it is merely age, a sort of hyper-maturation into the role of an adult vampire. Maybe it is Lexi’s tutelage. Or the fact that I am faced with an actual challenge, a death-defying challenge, and I simply know I can’t expend my energy killing for sport. Whatever the cause, the result is the same. Though the scent of blood is still everywhere, I no longer feel compelled to hunt for sport. Hunting is distracting. My hunger is something to be sated quickly rather than enjoyably. Of course, the question is, how will I free Damon? Attack everyone in sight, creating a melee of destruction? Convince Callie to shed her vervain wreath so I can compel her to do my bidding? But Callie seems to have a power all her own. That much is clear to her henchmen, and to me. Of course, my Power is stronger. I have no doubt that I’ll persevere. I’ll save Damon, and then I’ll reward myself with a drink from Callie’s neck. I spent the entire day pacing my room, cutting a path through the dust that lined the wooden floor. Plans to free Damon flitted through my head one by one, but just as quickly as they came, I shot them down for being too daring, too risky, too destructive. Id already learned from the siege on the vampires in Mystic Falls that one false move can cause a domino effect of violence and despair. â€Å"You look like a caged animal,† Lexi said, appearing at my doorway. Her voice was light, but worry lines creased her forehead. A young, serious-looking blond boy stared out at me. His blue eyes contained a hint of sadness, and his cleft chin jutted in defiance. He looked incredibly familiar. The three were engaged in intense conversation. Lexi put her hand on mine. â€Å"Gallagher.† The men paused on the porch. â€Å"Im telling you, the vampire I have is the real thing. I could have him killed and sell you his blood. Youd make a fortune marketing it as the fountain of youth or an elixir of life,† Gallagher said roughly. My stomach plummeted. In the far corner, Callie Gallagher sat in a pair of weathered overalls and a white linen shirt. Her red hair fell down her back in a vervain-laced braid, and her head was bent as she pored over a ledger book. A garland of vervain was strung along the marble mantle, and I noticed a few vampire muzzles–the same sort that my father had used to subdue Katherine–tossed carelessly on an end table. â€Å"I have something else that might interest you,† Gallagher said, locking eyes with the elderly man while the other sat, silently. â€Å"I didnt want to bring it up out on the street.† â€Å"Yes?† The man leaned forward. Silver with a blue stone, but it seems to give him additional power. None of my men have been able to get it off his finger, but when hes dead â€Å" â€Å"Father!† Callie interjected. The two men stared at her. â€Å"Yes, girl?† Gallagher asked, his voice dangerously low. â€Å"Ive been looking over the books, and well make a fortune if hes kept alive. Its the best for the show.† Though her expression was all business, her tone didnt actually sound mercenary. â€Å"My boss.† Gallagher laughed ruefully, but from the way the vein in his temple throbbed, I could tell he didnt appreciate Callies interjection. â€Å"Girl, can you get us some brandy?† Callie stood up and stalked out of the room. I was surprised to feel a sliver of sympathy–and kinship–with her. I knew what it was like to have a headstrong father. Id wanted nothing more than to please him, but Giuseppe Salvatore always thought he knew best. I dared to disagree only once, and he killed me for it. â€Å"As I was saying, the ring † Gallagher said. I snapped back to attention. â€Å"You kill that monster and Ill buy it all. The fangs, the blood, the ring. Everything. And Ill give you a very good price,† the elderly man said in a trembling voice, barely concealing his excitement. Before I could pounce, shattering the glass that separated me from the man who was trying to sell my brother in bits and pieces, an iron-firm grip clasped my arms behind me and dragged me back out to the street. â€Å"Get a hold of yourself, Stefan!† Lexi hissed as she pulled me along the sidewalk. When she reached the corner of Laurel Street, she let me go. â€Å"That man is a sadist!† I fumed. â€Å"Hes a businessman. He wants to kill your brother, and if they find out about you, theyll certainly want to kill you too,† Lexi said, pushing her blond braid over her shoulder. My mind spun. â€Å"What about the girl?† I asked. Lexi snorted derisively. â€Å"What about her?† â€Å"She thinks Damon should be kept alive. Maybe she can convince her father of that,† I said desperately. â€Å"Dont even think about it. Shes a human, and she will follow her fathers orders until the end of her days,† Lexi said, dropping her voice to lower than a whisper as another couple walked toward us. As they passed, the man tipped his top hat, and Lexi curtseyed back. Lexi had offered to help, but everything shed done so far had seemed designed only to dissuade me. â€Å"We have to do something!† â€Å"I know you will find a way to save him,† she said firmly. We turned another corner and the spire of the church across from Lexis house came into view. â€Å"But Stefan, you must remember that controlling yourself around humans is much more than simply not attacking them.† When we reached the back porch, she stopped and put her hands on my shoulders, forcing me to look into her clear amber eyes. â€Å"Do you know the real reason why we dont drink human blood?† â€Å"Why?† I asked. â€Å"Because if we dont drink human blood, we dont need humans,† she said in a tight voice. We need some lightness,† Lexi announced, pouring herself a glass of blood from the decanter on the side table. She glanced around the room. Meteor Essay CraterEarly in the history of the solar system, when space was cluttered with thematerials of its formation, the planets and their moons were heavily bombardedby meteorites. Some of the members of the solar system (Mars, Mercury and ourmoon, for example) still show the residuals of the primordial rain of iron andstone. On our dynamic planet earth, erosion by weather, water and ice and thecontinuous reshuffling of crustal plates have erased most of the evidence ofthat early cratering. The solar system, not yet completely clear of the cosmicdebris which was left over at its birth, continued to rain small meteorites downupon the planets, and occasionally the earth is struck by an object large enoughto excavate a sizable hole. Dozens of meteorite impact craters have beenrecognized on the crust of the earth. In most cases, erosion has removed all butthe shattered root zones of the craters. The most famous terrestrial impactcrater is in the desert near Winslow, Arizona. Origin of Meteor Cr ater Whathappens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? Meteor Crater!50,000 years ago, a huge iron-nickel meteorite, hurtling at about 40,000 milesper hour, struck the rocky plain of Northern Arizona with an explosive forcegreater than 20 million tons of TNT. The meteorite estimated to have been about150 feet across and weighing several hundred tons, in less than a few seconds,left a crater 700 feet deep and more than 4000 thousand feet across. Largeblocks of limestone, some of them, the sizes of small houses were heaved ontothe rim. Flat-lying beds of rock in the crater walls were overturned infractions of a second and uplifted permanently as much as 150 feet. Today, thecrater is 550 feet deep, and 2.4 miles in circumference. Twenty football gamescould be played simultaneously on its floor, while more than two millionspectators observed from its sloping sides. In 1902, Daniel Moreau Barringer, aPhiladelphia mining engineer, became interested in the site as a potenti alsource for mining iron. He later visited the crater and was convinced that ithad been formed by the impact of a large iron meteorite. He further assumed thatthis body was buried beneath the crater floor. Barringer was correct. The craterwas formed by a meteorite impact, but what he did not know was that themeteorite underwent total disintegration during impact through vaporization,melting and fragmentation. In 1903, he formed the Standard Iron Company and hadfour placer mining claims filed with the federal Government, thus obtaining thepatents and ownership of the two square miles containing the crater. Barringerspent the next 26 years attempting to find what he believed would be the giantiron meteorite. Barringer never found what he was looking for, but he dideventually prove to the scientific community that the crater was the site of ameteorite impact. ATextbooks are concerned with presenting the facts of the case(whatever the case may be) as if there can be no disputing them, a s if they arefixed immutable. And still worse, there is usually no clue given as to whoclaimed these are the facts of the case, or how emailprotected discovered these facts(there being no he or she, I or we). There is no sense of the frailty orambiguity of human judgment, no hint of the possibilities of error. Knowledge ispresented as a commodity to be acquired, never as human struggle to understand,to overcome falsity, to stumble toward the emailprotected -Neil Postman. The End ofEducation Grove Karl Gilbert, the first person to conduct a full scientificsurvey of the mysterious crater in the Arizona desert, was the most renowngeologist of his generation, and has been described as Aperhaps the closestequivalent to a saint that American science has yet produced. (Hoyt, p37) He wastolerant, generous, and fair-minded, with an intense dislike of controversy ofany kind. As chief geologists of the U.S. Geological Survey, his prestigiousdemeanor was held in high esteem. such that none of his colleagues or successorswere willing to publicly question his conclusions-even when it became apparentthat some of those conclusions had been wrong. In 1891, Gilbert becameinterested in reports of a large collection of nickel-iron meteorites found inthe neighborhood of a gigantic circular crater in the Arizona desert. He is widely respected as one of the founders of modern geography. Alexander von Humboldts travels, experiments, and knowledge transformed western science in the nineteenth century. Early Life Alexander von Humboldt was born in Berlin, Germany in 1769. His father, who was an army officer, died when he was nine years old so he and his older brother Wilhelm were raised by their cold and distant mother. Tutors provided their early education which was grounded in languages and mathematics. Once he was old enough, Alexander began to study at the Freiberg Academy of Mines under the famous geologist A.G. Werner. Von Humboldt met George Forester, Captain James Cooks scientific illustrator from his second voyage, and they hiked around Europe. In 1792, at the age of 22, von Humboldt began a job as a government mines inspector in Franconia, Prussia. When he was 27, Alexanders mother died, leaving him as substantial income from the estate. The following year, he left government service and began to plan travels with Aime Bonpland, a botanist. The pair went to Madrid and obtained special permission and passports from King Charles II to explore South America. Once they arrived in South America, Alexander von Humboldt and Bonpland studied the flora, fauna, and topography of the continent. In 1800 von Humboldt mapped over 1700 miles of the Orinco River. This was followed by a trip to the Andes and a climb of Mt. Chimborazo (in modern Ecuador), then believed to be the tallest mountain in the world. They didnt make it to the top due to a wall-like cliff but they did climb to over 18,000 feet in elevation. While on the west coast of South America, von Humboldt measured and discovered the Peruvian Current, which, over the objections of von Humboldt himself, is also known as the Humboldt Current. In 1803 they explored Mexico. Alexander von Humboldt was offered a position in the Mexican cabinet but he refused. Travels to America and Europe The pair were persuaded to visit Washington, D.C. by an American counselor and they did so. They stayed in Washington for three weeks and von Humboldt had many meetings with Thomas Jefferson and the two became good friends. Von Humboldt sailed to Paris in 1804 and wrote thirty volumes about his field studies. During his expeditions in the Americas and Europe, he recorded and reported on magnetic declination. He stayed in France for 23 years and met with many other intellectuals on a regular basis. Von Humboldts fortunes were ultimately exhausted because of his travels and self-publishing of his reports. In 1827, he returned to Berlin where he obtained a steady income by becoming the King of Prussias advisor. Von Humboldt was later invited to Russia by the tsar and after exploring the nation and describing discoveries such as permafrost, he recommended that Russia establish weather observatories across the country. The stations were established in 1835 and von Humboldt was able to use the data to develop the principle of continentality, that the interiors of continents have more extreme climates due to a lack of moderating influence from the ocean. He also developed the first isotherm map, containing lines of equal average temperatures. From 1827 to 1828, Alexander von Humboldt gave public lectures in Berlin. The lectures were so popular that new assembly halls had to be found due to the demand. As von Humboldt got older, he decided to write everything known about the earth. He called his work Kosmos and the first volume was published in 1845, when he was 76 years old. Kosmos was well written and well received. The first volume, a general overview of the universe, sold out in two months and was promptly translated into many languages. Other volumes focused on such topics as humans effort to describe the earth, astronomy, and earth and human interaction. Humboldt died in 1859 and the fifth and final volume was published in 1862, based on his notes for the work. In others words, their life expectancy has increase. With the advances in medical care and better nutrition, older people are living longer, they are more visible, more active and more independent than ever before and they are in better health. Therefore there is a growing concern regarding the global phenomenon of aging. A decline in the birth as well as death rates has resulted in an increase in the elderly population. As a result, the demographers are now paying more attention to the issues of aging. Total Population 26.75 m 28.96 m 65 and above 1.15 m 4.3% 1.36 m 4.7 % This table shows that the total population and the aged of 65 years or above in Malaysia in the year of 2005 and 2010. In 2005, the total population of Malaysia was 26.75 million, and which 1.15 million or 4.3% was aged 65 years and above. Further, Hazzard (1995) described elder abuse as cruel and inhumane t reatment of the elderly. Kapur (1997) defines it as a kind of harassment or an injustice done to the elderly by the family members themselves. I was raised in a small town called Joao Pessoa by my grandmother .The town was very small that everyone knew their neighbors and the town. At this time as was single and living in Brazil. We had a very nice house, which I had my own room and I loved it. I had everything in my room. But was a especial place that I like about my room, It was where I keep all of my favorite things, my craft supplies, favorite CD’s, books, magazines, cameras, photos, and my diary. A place to escape when my house was a little crazy and noise. I used to love stay on my room writing on my diary for hours, every day before go to bed, I used to sat down on my desk and writing about my life. I always think about the future. My grandmother was old, almost 65, and I was always worrying what will happen to me after she dies. I grew up with opportunities for intellectual and spiritual growth, secure in the knowledge that I was loved by her. But not from my parents who gave me away. When I was 16, my life changed dramatically in the fall of my sophomore year of high school. My beloved grandmother was dying of cancer. I was forced my view of the world and my sense of responsibility to take a dramatic turn. Each morning before school I went to the hospital where she received chemotherapy to treat the cancer that was destroying her body. After school finished, I went back to the hospital to speed the rest of afternoon with her. Many times I eat at the hospital just to spend more time with her. Because I knew that after she dies everything will change in my life. In the fall of the same year she dies. I was very depressed about my life. I knew that I need to move on, but didn’t know how. Years passed, and I was finished high school. In 1998 was accepted into the nurse school, and the same time studying to be an elementary school teacher. In 2000, after graduate as a teacher, my aunt invited me to come to United of States. That happen 6 months after found the love of my life. I was undecided, but I ended up accepting my aunt offer and postpone my love history and my career as nurse. I came to Orlando in 2000 and sign up to English school. Since already decided to leave, I had to learn the language. I remember like today, I was feeling lost, since I didn’t had any friends or family here. But, I came with a purpose, to learn the language and make my life here. One year after living here, I break up with my boyfriend in  Brazil. I was not sure any more about going back to my country. I want to try the whole long distance thing but he doesn’t, so we ended up finishing our relationship. My actual husband, I met at school. Close to the apartment that I used to leave, there was a high school, and I decide to go there to get more information about the English classes. When I arrived to school, there were a lot of people waiting to enroll for the classes. I sign in and wait until somebody calls me. After few minutes the lady called my name and asked me for some documentation that was required to enroll. My purse was so crowded with a lot of papers and credit cards inside, that when I opened, I dropped all my cards on the floor, and then a guy came to help me. I thank you him for the help and I went to the registration desk. After I finish with all paper work, he follows me through the exit door and ask if he can see me another day. I guess he liked me. Then he offers to take me home since I didn’t have transportation. I didn’t want to accept. But I felt I could trust on him. Time passed and we went out many times. On the beginning I didn’t like him, but he always surprises me. A month later, we stared dating, and after two years we got married. My family is warm and loving. There’s me, my husband, and my son. I am thirty two years old. My husband Jorge is forty two, and the 9 year-old Kevin Gabriel is our only child. . We’ve been married for nine years. My husband is a Dentist on his country, but here in the United States, he was not able yet to take his license, so he works for a hotel as Supervisor. My son Kevin Gabriel is the best son in the world. He is very calm, is carrying about his family. He loves to go school and paint. When he has a free time he drawn his family on the peace of paper and stick on his bedroom wall. He is always telling me how much he loves our family.
